Puberty and RSE Social Stories Bundle (Girls)

This is a set of 18 social stories to support the teaching of Puberty and RSE to children with a focus on girls. A bundle for boys is also available and I would urge any teacher to consider teaching both male and female elements to all children as and when appropriate to ensure children have an understanding of Puberty and RSE from both perspectives.

The social stories included in this bundle are:

1.Trusted Adults.

2.Public and private.

3.My Private Parts.

4.Female reproductive system.

5.My body changes during puberty.

6.Menstruation

7.Having my period.

8.Using sanitary pads.

9.Using period pants.

10. Wearing a bra.

11. Sexual intercourse and conception.

12. Private touching.

13. Sweating.

14. Sometimes I get spots.

15. Shaving legs and armpits.

16. Coping with emotions during puberty.

17. I need to keep my clothes on.

18. Chair rocking.

Each social story is on a 1 page template, split into 8 squares and is meant to be printed onto 1 A4 page. If you prefer to have 1 section per page I would advise printing this resource onto an A3 page and cut it up and staple/bind into a small book.

Note: before using this resource with your class here are a couple of things I would urge you to consider first:

1.Ensure what you are teaching aligns with your schools RSE policy. Your policy may need to be updated to reflect what you are needing/having to teach and support in your Autism class.

2.Often we need to teach and support some of these more sensitive topics earlier with the children in our Autism classes than we would need to with their mainstream peers. As such, I would always advise you to discuss the teaching of some of these topics with parents first to get their input and insight.

3.I would also urge you to watch the highlight bubble ‘Puberty and RSE’ on my Instagram page @TeachingCreation Station to see how I use these resources and what other considerations I make during the teaching of Puberty and RSE.

The order of social story topics as given above is my own suggestion and the order in which I would introduce and teach these topics in my own class. Some of these more sensitive topics (eg. Private touching) would only be introduced with younger children in the event of needing to support a behaviour such as these.
